1959 Green Wool Tweed Suit by Jack Sarnoff

Jack Sarnoff was both a person and a label.  Actually, this was a 7th Ave. family owned manufacturer of ladies coats, suits and tailored clothing from the 1950s to the early 1970s. For more on this label: link. The fabric on the slim line suit is great. It’s a French yardage by Lesur. I think the attached scarf is chic and lets you wear this is in a number of ways. We show a few possibilities. It’s a great place to showcase a favorite brooch. The princess line jacket has raglan sleeves. The suit is fully lined in silk. Side metal zipper in the skirt.

Beautiful Early 1960s Loden Green Wool Vintage Suit By Helen Rose

Occasionally, I consult with my fellow members at the Vintage Fashion Guild on a garment. Sometimes, to share a great find, but others to refine the date. With this suit, it was a case of both. We all agreed that it is a great design, and the date seems to fall in the 1962 - 65 range. The store label in question puts it to the earlier part of the 60s as well since Selman‘s changed their label in the mid decade. . The fabric is a loden green wool suiting and the jacket has clean lines with a remarkable front design . The extra large fabric button closure uses an extended tab and a huge buttonhole. The straight skirt has a wide shaped and boned waistband that is visible at the jacket cutout. This suit is fully lined in green silk. Skirt has a center back nylon zipper. And it’s all beautifully made.
I wrote up a bio on Helen Rose for the VFG She was a well respected and successful film costume designer who moved into retail fashion in 1958 until her retirement in 1972. Here’s a link to the VFG article

1980s Thierry Mugler Navy Pinstripe Pants Suit

This is one acquisition that makes me long to be taller. Ah well - a life time of wishing hasn’t made that happen! So here is a great Thierry Mugler pants suit for you. The long lines are really highlighted by the subtle pinstripe. The jacket has padded shoulder with a wonderfully seamed front to nip in the waist. The inset is white pique. Both this and the jacket close with Mugler’s press studs under decorative buttons. The wide straight leg trousers have no waist band and close at center back with a zipper.  The spare snap and button packet is still attached inside the jacket neckline.

This wonderful early 50s striped wool suit  has the Irene hallmarks of mitered lapels and cuffs with beautifully placed darts and a set in corner dart at the front waist. And tiny welt pockets, too. The skirt has a back kick plate with a floating panel behind it , another Irene technique. The jacket is fully lined in cream crepe de chine and the skirt is half lined with a side metal zipper. A wonderful suit by a premier designer in a rare large size.

Vintage 1960s Cashmere Hounds-tooth Suit in Camel & Brown SZ S

The source for this suit said she always wore it with boots and a sweater - I think she was onto something. And it would be so warm for a cold winter in that combination. This 1960s suit has a long line, cardigan style jacket with box pleated patch pockets and front hooks to close. The original leather and chain belt to shapes it in. The skirt has inverted box pleat at the front for flare and movement. And did I mention it’s cashmere? In a camel and brown color way. Both pieces are fully lined in a rust taffeta, and the skirt closes with a side nylon zipper.

Feminine 1950s Navy Blue Wool Davidow Fitted Suit

This is one of the earlier Davidow suits we have offered. Today, we usually see the straighter 1960s suits. This is a beautifully made ( but Davidows always were) suit in a deep navy blue wool. The flared skirt is pleated all around in graduated box pleats. Lovely. I must say, my mother has a very similar suit from 1953-4, so I think we can say mid 1950s on the date. The fitted jacket has small shoulder pads, 3/4 sleeves with cuffs, a spiffy shaped hem, and bound button holes. The jacket is fully lined in navy crepe, while the skirt is partially lined with a side metal zipper. Not only is this a Davidow, but it carries the Blum's Vogue store label, a very pricey ladies shop on Chicago's "Magnificent Mile".

Labels: Davidow and Blum's Vogue Chicago

Size:  Jacket: Bust: 38" Waist: 29", Shoulders: 15", Sleeves: 29", CB Neck to Hem: 16 1/2". CB Neck to Hem : 19"
Skirt: Waist: 27", Hips: Full, Waist to Hem: 28", Hem Sweep: 120"

Condition: Excellent. No spots, no holes, no stains. Very Fresh and ready to wear.
