This lovely evening dress is a beautiful floral chiffon with red roses on a cream ground with green and blue accents. The shirred front bodice has a dropped waist and the neckline is finished with a coordinating silk velvet band, straps and bow. The skirt is quite full, and glides over two layers: a Tarleton type underlining and a taffeta lining. Side metal zipper to close.

1950s Sequined Black Crepe Evening Gown and Capelet by Lucien LeLong SZ S
Order #ET100
1950s Sequined Black Crepe Evening Gown and Capelet by Lucien Lelong SZ S
ET100
This stunning dress and capelet come from the estate of Heide Scharf, a German actress and dancer, she starred in a several films and was profiled in 1946 in Life Magazine, dancing in the war rubble in Germany. Heidi married John Pommer, a production manager, etc. in the film and TV business - he died in 2014 at age 98. His father was Eric Pommer, a film producer and big deal in German film from WWI - WWII, who spent quite a bit of time in Paris, and then here in the States once he got his family out of Germany. He produced Marlene Dietrich in the Blue Angel, discovered Maureen O'Hara, that sort of thing. There is a very extensive bio on IMdb written by his son John.
So, here's the story: once Heidi married John Pommer in 1950, Eric Pommer would buy clothing for her in Paris and bring it back. This is one of her dresses. It has a Lucien Lelong label. You will note the Made in France on the label. Lelong did have a r-t-w- line and his house closed somewhere between 1948 – 1952. He died in 1958. With the marriage in 1950 and the house closing by 1952, I think we have a good date on this dress.
All that said, it’s a neat, slim fitted evening dress with sequins in graded sizes hand sewn throughout. The sequins become much denser at the side and cover the back. The capelet is covered as well. The dress has a light structure inside, with a wide petersham waistband. There are shaped panels on at the side backs seams and godets at the back hem for flare. There is a slight train, but the mannequin is too tall to have it show properly. The capelet is lined in chiffon.

Construction: the sequins are hand sewn. The cut seam allowances are caught down by this, as the sequins were sewn on after the dress was assembled, and cross the seams to flow uninterrupted around the garments. Some of the seam allowances were hand whipped. The capelet sequins are sewn through the silk chiffon lining as well, except in one area, where I think it means there was a change of technique along the way.  Side metal Talon zipper to close, which makes me this this was R-T-W and finished in the USA after import.

Label: in capelet collar: Lucien LeLong 16 Avenue Matignon Paris Made in France Modele Depose

Size: Capelet: Neck: 18”, CB Length: 15”.
Dress:  Bust: 36”, Waist: 28”, Hips: 40”, Shoulder to Waist: 15”, Shoulder to Hem Front: 55” Back: 57”, Hem Sweep: 102”.

Condition: Sturdy and wearable, no stains or holes. There are a few missing sequins, and a lot of cut threads. The dress has been altered to fit at the straps and armholes, with a tuck and a dart per side. The finishing binding was left alone so if you wish to take these out, there are sequins on the interior to sew on.
There are darts taken in the side backs with one row of hand sewing, hand whipped edges, and one row of machine sewing. There are 4 layers here as shown. And an odd panel effect on the outside. The dress already has wide shoulders for its size, I can't imagine how wide this would be across the upper back with these removed, and have no idea what it would do the exterior lines.

1950s Blue and Green Print Silk Day Dress SZ S

I love this fabric. What a grand abstract print in blue, green, black and white. This dress has a very unusual cut. Very. The sweetheart neckline is caught with a large scarf like tie. And then below that, there are two more ties and cutouts that expose the midriff. These ties seem to be removable if you want bare skin there. Or you can leave them and have a lot of flowing fabric as shown. The bodice has a dropped waist.  The sleeves are below elbow, and the skirt is draped at the front with a front swing, plus pleats and flare at the center back. The dress closes with a metal zipper ta the center back that does not go break the neckline and pulls downward rather than the standard up direction.

Label: none, most likely home sewn.

Size: Bust: 35”, Waist: 28”, Hips: 48”, Shoulders: approx. 15.5”, Sleeves: 20”, CB Neck to Waist: 18”, Waist to Hem Front: 31” Back: 32“, Hem Sweep: 146”.

Condition: One spot as shown at the front neckline, and one mended hole with small adjacent spot as shown in the skirt.

This beautiful all lace gown was worn by three different brides, first in 1953, again between 1953 – 1955, and in 1979. The purchaser can be given the family history. The very gathered skirt sweeps to a chapel train over 2 net underskirts and a satin lining. There are sequin appliques at the collar, waist and down the skirt side front. The back closes with classic fabric covered button and loops.
The dress is shown over the original net hoop style crinoline. We are also offering the original tiara with the replacement veil from 1979.

1920s Vintage White Irish Poplin Uniform Dress from Filene’s Size L
D2590
Day dress or Uniform? That’s is the question. When we acquired this dress, it was starched, starched, starched. So, I am inclined to think uniform – probably nurse? I found ads in the early 1920s advertising this fabric in nursing uniforms. Today? Wear it however you want. The mother-of-pearl buttons are functional and removable for laundry as are the cufflinks on the French cuffs. The front is open to well below the waist. So, the belt functions to keep it closed there. There are belt loops. The belt shown will be included, but it is a newer cotton belt with on 1920s buckle. It’s just a hair whiter than the dress.

What a great 1920s dress in rayon chiffon with zig zag velvet appliques (the cord trimmed edges! the shoulder pin tucks!). The velvet is used at the lower portion of the bodice, and the front corner flap of the overskirt as well as the softly draped sash and the cuffs of the sleeves. The sash is held by a decorative metal buckle with enamel work, chasing and square rhinestones. The dress has an attached lining with nude tone silk yoke and black silk crepe body. This dress is intended to fit easily, with a bit of fit at the dropped waist. There are no closures.

Early 1920s Deep Cream Silk Satin and Art Deco Lace Vintage Dress SZ S

This early 1920s dress has a fantastic Art Deco silk lace skirt overlay with a silk satin bodice and underskirt. The matching sleeve panels are attached to a silk slip type underbodice. The lace is embellished on the skirt with gathered roundels of silk ribbon and on the sleeves with ribbon edging. The outer bodice is a tabard style with open sides and soft tucks. The skirt is gathered. Plus! This has the boned pannier hoops occasionally seen in the early 20s skirts. Side closures with hooks and snaps. There was a sash at one time- there are still some snaps for it at the side. We will include the silk teddy that came with the dress. It has lovely tatting lace at the neckline and tucks at the front and back bust.

Label: none

Size: Dress: Bust: 34”, Low Waist: 31”, Hips: Full, Shoulders: 14”, Shoulder Neck to Waist: 18” Waist to Hem: 30”, Hem Sweep: Lining 49”, Lace 80” Teddy: Bust: 36”, Hips: 44”, Full Girth: 71”, Shoulder to Hem: 32”. Condition: Exterior is good, with a repair under the shoulder snaps that is hidden when fastened, a spot on the front bodice a shown. And two small holes where the sash was attached at the left side. The ribbon trim is deteriorating – there is shredding in several places. Plus, one spot and a hole as shown at the hem area of the lace skirt. The underskirt has a large, but very faint moisture ring type spot. This has been washed. The ribbon straps of the slip have losses and have been reinforced with silk. The attendant silk teddy has replacement straps, and a large hand sewn backing where the silk tore at the hem of the body where it snaps onto the crotch straps. There are holes are as shown. But as it appears to have been original with the dress, we will include it.

1920s Coral Beaded Silk Chiffon Party Dress SZ S

This early 1920s dress is a great color and has lovely beading. Please know it also has flaws. More than we usually offer here, but we couldn’t resist the color. We’ll detail those lower down the page. It’s a persimmon silk chiffon over a silk slip with a dropped waist, loose fit and four gathered panels to the overskirt. The beading is done in silver bugles, both long and short, and pearl beads with wax centers. The closures are on the left, with snaps and a few hooks.

Label: none

Size: Bust: 34”, Low Waist: 34”, Hips: 52”, Shoulders: 14”, Shoulder to Waist: 20” to Hem: 44.5”, Hem Sweep: 52”

Condition: The flaws: large loss as shown at the right front shoulder, this has been backed with a dyed to match piece of chiffon. You’ll want a corsage over this. The beading – the large bugles are intact. Quite a few small bugles are missing. Some of the pearls have been replaced with modern pearl beads, but it’s a pretty good match. There are also some small holes along the edges of the over bodice. The big issue – this was stored in a hot environment at some point, and many of the wax interiors of the pearl melted, leaving a dark waxy residue. We removed all the pearl beads, washed the dress in Orvus and lukewarm water. Any hotter would have removed more wax, but also more dye. Then we re-stitched all the pearls. Then gave it a light and quick steam. Sadly, the darker areas are still there, and I don’t think they can be removed without losing all the dye. Plus, the pearls will have to come off and on again. These areas are around all the roundels of peals and are also scattered throughout the address. So, this is a colorful dress that is sturdy enough to wear, but only in a low light situation.

It’s 1940s, so there are should pads and a side metal zipper. Both the front and back necklines have rouleau ties at keyhole opening. The front is sheath cut without a waist seam ( it’s blouson on my form, but won’t necessarily be on you) and the back has a waist sea with two back belt that close with buttons and loops at the sides.

I adore that Wragge actually dated their label. This 1970 dress is a marvelous , bold print in orange, yellow, aqua, rose and fuchsia. The style is simple - open shirt style collar, Ύ flare sleeves and tent silhouette. This is beautifully made, with a silk lining, handset metal zipper and hand sewn hem. And side pockets, too! Wragge made good quality ready to wear for the younger American market. And did it well.

Label: BH Wragge 70

1950s Vintage Black, Pink &Turquoise Atomic Print Dress SZ S

I love the sleeve treatment on this dress! And the atomic era print is fantastic: pink, aqua and white in abstract bursts with dots.  Please note that the color is black, and some photos have been lightened to show the detail. The fitted bodice has a wide neckline with the open sleeves and covered button design. The skirt is gathered onto a dropped yoke, and this is edged with aqua piping to match the rimmed buttons and facings. Dress closes with a center back metal zipper.

Label: none

Condition: soil and fade on the interior neck facing. Belt shown is not included and zipper is a replacement.

Such a sweet and lovely soft dress. The fabric is a soft nylon organza over taffeta. The draped bodice has a wide midriff shirring with short sleeves. The gathered skirt has a deep hem and has its own soft rayon taffeta liner. Perfect for a party, outdoor or in. Add a hat, and you are ready for Derby time.

1950s Navy Blue Silk Satin Vintage Dress by Maurice Rentner SZ M

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Maurice Rentner label, it was a long time, Rentner was a respected manufacturer of quality women’s wear from the 1920s until his death in 1958. According to the VFG Label Resource, Wilson Folmar was one of the designers there. After 1958, Bill Blass designed for the label until he bought the company in 1967.
This dress is likely pre 1958, as Blass is not credited on the label. It’s a rich navy silk satin, with bateau neckline, pleated skirt, shaped matching belt, and wonderful deep draped sleeve cuffs. The cuffs are shaped by cartridge pleats at the underarm sleeve seam. A great detail, done with subtlety. Side metal zipper to close.

The photos don’t do this breezy dress justice. The fabric is brilliant and wonderful. I think it’s a Persian influenced black printing blues pinks and greens. The bodice had a button front, wide self belt and kimono cut sleeves. The full skirt has inverted box pleats. Size metal zipper to close. d.
