Chic 1950s Vintage Pink & Grey Gabardine Suit w/ 2 Skirts Sz M

They used to make these 3 piece sets with a skirt choice. Love the idea. You could have the mare dressy matching suit, or a snappier contrast one. And this set is pink and grey - pretty perfect. The unlined bolero jacket is the pink and grey weave with a fine red line. The collar is the solid pink rayon gab, while the buttons and pocket flaps incorporate both.  The solid skirt is a bit more flared then the woven one. Both have a center front seam, darts and side metal zipper to close.

Feminine 1950s Vintage Negligee Robe in Satin and Lace  SZ XS

This is very, very pretty. Small, but pretty. It’s a late 40s, early 50s negligee in ivory acetate satin with pale ecru lace yoke, collar, and wide waist inset panel. The collar is bound with satin, and all the closures are satin buttons and loops. The sleeves end in lace with elastic cuffs. The full skirts are open at the front, and gently gathered along the slightly dropped waist.

Label: Daphne

Size: Labeled a 30. Please note that this is on a size 33 bust mannequin, and we also tried it on a size 34 mannequin successfully. I think the determining factor is the shoulder measurement.

1950s Pink Lace and Taffeta Vintage Circle Skirt Party Dress
Sz S

This  young and pretty spring party or cocktail dress is very soft in pink and white, with a soft white lace over a pink taffeta. The bodice is fitted, with the nylon drape front and tails at the back. The drape is caught with a rhinestone pin at center front. The skirt is a circle, with a horsehair braid to stiffen the hem. The drape falls in tails, which also look nice tied up in a knot or bow. We shoe it both ways. Center back metal zipper to close.

Label: none

Size: Bust: 34" , Waist: 25" , Hips: full, Shoulder to Waist: 16”, Waist to Hem: 29", Hem circumference: 200” - full circle

Condition - Dry-cleaned. No spots or stains. One mend in the lace - we show a close-up. The taffeta skirt lining has an ombre effect. I don’t know if this was intentional or not. The skirt hem has hung out a bit as to be expected with a circular cut.  One of the tails has  breaks in it - when tied in a bow, these are hidden. They do generally fall into the folds, but can be seen of course in movement.

1950s Midnight Blue Wool Suit by Paul Parnes
D2265
This 1950s era suit form Paul Parnes has such great details. First, it has a waist length  jacket  and is a light weight wool. The cording is used to define the lines - and not just the front, collar and cuffs, but the bound buttonholes and side plackets of the skirt waist as well. My thought is that with the shirt jacket and button plackets on the side o f the skirt, this is a younger woman’s suit. The jacket has princess seams and set in sleeves with split cuffs. The skirt functionally buttons on both sides and there is no zipper.

Feminine Vintage 1950s Sybil Connolly Grey Wool Suit  SZ M/L

This feminine take on a tailored suit carries the label of renowned Irish designer Sybil Connolly. The  jacket has a flattering princess seam front , darted back and modified Ύ length  kimono sleeves. The stand away neck line has a Peter Pan style collar, while the front closes with covered buttons and bound buttonholes. The pleated skirt has a dropped yoke for a smooth fit over the hips under the jacket, then is a series of  24 (!)seamed panels, with the seams falling at the pleat returns. So it’s always pleated and always hangs in the proper folds. It’s very well cut. Both pieces are labeled.

Label: Sybil Connolly Dublin

Size:  Jacket: Bust: 40”, Waist: 34" , Shoulders: 18"  Sleeves: 17.5" , CB Neck to Waist: 16.5”, to Hem 22”.
Skirt: Waist: 29" , Hips: full" , Waist to Hem: 26" , Hem circumference: 110”

Condition: Excellent. No spots, stains or holes. The technique of sewing the hem is a bit odd, leaving raw edges. Sometimes with this type of skirt, the hem is turned up, then the pleat returns stitched vertically. In this skirt, that would have been too bulky. So the skirt seam were sewn and serged, then the hem was folded up and the last 3” of skirt stitched. You can see the matching notches still in the raw seams.  The panels are so narrow there was no need to do a hemstitch as the hem is caught up in the vertical seams every 5 inches.

1940 Embroidered Red Wool Vintage Coat by Louella Ballerino

This early 1940s, perhaps 1939 jacket from California designer Louella Ballerino is a great red wool with ethnic style embroidery. I see the ethnic influence of the late 30s and early 1940s here, when American designers were discovering European and late American folk wear designs. brilliant green, yellow white and purple wool embroidery. Ballerino was known for drawing inspiration from many international sources. This is a sophisticated garment however, meant for the East Coast - the store label is B. Altman. It is lined in cream satin and has large shoulder pads with a hook closure at the neckline. The welt pockets are functional and there are short side vents.

Labels: Louella Ballerino California 100% Wool B. Altman & Co. Fifth Ave. New York

Vintage 1930s - 40s Hattie Carnegie Custom Label  Red Velvet Pajama Set

This 1938 - 44 red velvet pajama set is one of the best I have seen. The details are grand. The channel stitched pockets and lapels, the button tabs on the patch pockets, the rhinestone buttons and bound buttonholes - it’s all great. Plus the rhinestone button fly on the pants and the wide velvet belt to match. And there are shoulder pads, of course. The blouse is long and tucks in. The pants have a soft wide leg and patch pocket of their own. The velvet is silk and quite soft and a bit sheer as you can see in the photos where the mannequin legs show through.

Labels: Hattie Carnegie with custom label underneath

Size:  Blouse: Bust: 37” Waist: 29”  Shoulders: 13“ Sleeves: 11.5” CB to Hem: 24”
Pants: Waist: 27” Hips: 39” Outseam: 39”.

Condition: Good, there are dark discoloration bands down the right sleeves and right leg as shown. There has been a repair at the base of the fly on the underside. While it is presentable on the outside, it is doubtful it will be sturdy enough to wear. There is a slit in the velvet at the top of the left sleeve cap. This could be altered to be hidden in the seam. All in all, a good piece for display, but not wear.

1940s Navy Blue Gabardine Jacket Blazer with Dressmaker Details

I do love a tailored jacket. This one in navy blue wool gabardine  has great details and construction. It’s just my onion, but the 1940s were one of the best eras for tailored womenswear. The collar has the long points of the e40s, the set of the shoulders and shoulder pads is strong, love the rimmed covered buttons and bound buttons holes, and the pocket details are fab. Plus, the western style should yoke details is super. The brooch  isn’t included, but it looks great, doesn’t it? Try a more modern one and see how it works. Rollman’s was a Cincinnati department store founded in 1867 with a location  at 5th and Vine, and then later at the Swifton Center, an early Cincinnati mall.  I believe they were taken over by Mabley & Carew in the early 1960s.

1950s Navy Blue Wool Davidow Fitted Suit
Feminine 1950s Navy Blue Wool Davidow Fitted Suit

This is one of the earlier Davidow suits we have offered. Today, we usually see the straighter 1960s suits. This is a beautifully made ( but Davidows always were) suit in a deep navy blue wool. The flared skirt is pleated all around in graduated box pleats. Lovely. I must say, my mother has a very similar suit from 1953-4, so I think we can say mid 1950s on the date. The fitted jacket has small shoulder pads, 3/4" sleeves with cuffs, a spiffy shaped hem, and bound button holes. The jacket is fully lined in navy crepe, while the skirt is partially lined with a side metal zipper.  Not only is this a Davidow, but it carries the Blum's Vogue store label, a very pricey  ladies shop on Chicago's "Magnificent Mile".

Labels: Davidow and  Blum's Vogue Chicago

Size:  Jacket: Bust: 38" Waist: 29", Shoulders: 15", Sleeves: 29", CB Neck to Hem: 16 1/2". CB Neck to Hem : 19"
Skirt: Waist: 27", Hips: Full, Waist to Hem: 28", Hem Sweep: 120"
